Leng Xinxue works at the Education and Employment Department at the Beijing Disabled Persons’ Federation. Upon graduating with a degree in teaching, she could have gone to better schools to pursue her career. However, she chose to be a teacher at a school for the deaf without hesitation because of a joke her mother once told her. That was when she got to know sign language, the second language of her life.

Greetings from a Silent World

A sign language interpreter wearing a “transparent” mask drew wide attention at Beijing’s Regular Press Conferences on COVID-19 Control. Leng Xinxue, the interpreter, is also the inventor of the special mask. Leng said: “I am honored to interpret for the press conference.” She and her team have done tremendous work to ensure the quality of their sign language interpretation. Leng Xinxue went to great lengths to design the elaborate “transparent” masks, as in sign language interpretation, where hand gestures are used in combination with facial expressions and lip movements to deliver complete and accurate information to people with hearing impairment. It is her hope that manufacturers can produce more of such “transparent” masks using the same standards, thus benefiting those suffering hearing loss.

It is a career, not a job to make a living

“Some people think that our work is just there to help a small number of people,” Leng Xinxue said. However, Leng holds that when each and every individual can enjoy the rights they are entitled to, social progress is made. Like the numerous cells of society, those serving persons with disabilities view what they do as a career that requires dedication, rather than a job to make a living. “What I and my colleagues have in common is that we all strive to make those we serve feel happy, equal and cared for by our society,” she said. “While showing them how our society cares for them, we are also proving to society what they are capable of.”
